Both teams held leads of two and three points as the game went back and forth with neither team gaining a solid foothold. Olivia Krueger would hit a couple of three-pointers to give the Red Hawks some momentum at the beginning of the third quarter, but the Hatchets would battle back and build a seven-point lead in the fourth and hold on for the victory. ....

Leading the way for the Pirates (1-1) were Maya Pfaff with 13 points, Mariah Jahn and Josie Kozfkay with 7 points each, Maddie Geiger and Paige Anderson with 6 points each, Brenna Bischer with 5 and Leandra Wolschlager with 4. Pirates head coach Jim Tamlyn said the condensed season has started with a hectic pace that won’t let up until the season is over and his team is dealing with a short bench, but he and his players are happy to be back playing and they are looking forward to their matchup with Ubly on Monday night. He has two new varsity players in Bischer and freshman Jahn, and he was pleased with how the Pirates played as team on Saturday. ....
