Silver City Police Chief, Freddie Portillo, has completed a review of 2020 crime statistics that revealed most incidents of criminal activity remained steady or declined, while aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, vehicle thefts, and residential burglaries were on the rise. Larcenies, including damage to motor vehicles, shoplifting, and other property damage decreased overall. In addition, motor vehicle crashes decreased 32% from 2019 which could be attributed to proactive enforcement of safety laws and less traffic due to COVID-19. The New Mexico Department of Health has announced that the state has administered over 500,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. According to a release from the NMDOH, as of February 22nd, the state has partially vaccinated more than 16.5% of New Mexicans, and fully vaccinated more than 8%. Here’s a look at some local news brought to you by Silver City Radio. Today, seven New Mexico counties have changed from red to yellow according to the county-by-county COVID-19 framework. Grant County is joined by Colfax, Los Alamos, San Miguel, Sierra, Socorro, and Union in reaching the less restrictive yellow category. Harding County is the only county reaching the green level. Although the yellow level is still considered high risk, some mandated restrictions are lessened that include increased in-person capacity, limited indoor dining, increased places of lodging capacity, and mass gatherings up to 10 persons or 25 vehicles. The state’s largest counties, including Bernalillo, Sandoval, Santa Fe and Doña Ana, remain in the red level of restrictions. ....
