rewind to 2011, she said, oh, sorry, not 2011, this was last year. two years ago, 2021, saying the president could not and should not forgive student loans, listen. >> people think that the president of the united states has the power for debt forgiveness. he does not. he can postpone, he can delay, but he does not have that power. that has to be an act of congress. >> sandra: what sort of political support does the president have to continue to push for this and move in this direction? >> they see this is crumbling. you've seen john tester, joe manchin and sinema vote with republicans, and democrats wish they could vote the same way. they know people in their districts and states, they don't want to be on the hook for a $400 billion grift and that's what this is. if you are going to forgive
total price tag for the rest of us $4 hundred billion. the gop is pushing to repeal that plan and yesterday their bill cleared a hurdle in the senate. three democrat senators manchin, sinema and tester voted to pass that legislation to block the hand-outs. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said this. >> we're up against an especially ridiculous example of left wing spending fantasy from the biden administration. the party behind a long list of pandering giveaways, student loan socialism just might actually take the cake. >> harris: charles. >> i agree 1,000 percent. i have to be honest, gets back to republicans not knowing how to message. the democratic party have become the party of the rich. the people who are doing the best in this country. graduates in america, particularly folks with amazing
democrats, and sinema, and manchin in the whole crowd that did not want to go along with anything like this. look, one of the problems here is by caving into this republican effort to use the debt ceiling as a hostage taking operation, it sets the norm for the next time the republicans will do exactly the same thing, assuming that the democrats have any power, and assuming the democrats are in the white house. so it's going to get worse, it's not going to get better. and by doing in this way, i think biden and democrats have made a terrible mistake, it should never have gotten to this point. >> indeed. and you've called out republicans fake outrage on the debt, pointing out the tax cuts out of the bush and trump administrations that have had ten trillion dollars to the country's debt since they were enacted. so what is a gop game plan here? they don't actually care about debts, or deficits, or fiscal
the united states, bob, it's one of the only two countries in the world with illegal debt ceiling. the other one is denmark, and denmark sets it so high it's a you relevant. relevant. we were talking in the last hour about how this new agreement, you know, puts the debt ceiling off until 2025, but we assume it will rear its ugly head again, especially if republicans control the house and the senate in 2025. all of this is to say, isn't it time to get rid of the dam debt ceiling rather than kicking the can down the road allowing the gop to use it as a hostage every two years? >> of course it is. and the fact that that democrats could not do it when they had both house of congress, when they controlled both houses of congress is a pretty damning indictment on the democrats, and sinema, and manchin in the whole crowd that did not want to go along with anything like this. look, one of the problems here is by caving into this republican effort to use the
catastrophic effect a default would have on millions and millions of americans. >> oh, yeah. we will not default. under no circumstances are we going to default. we should have raised the debt limit in december 2022, but unfortunately democrats in the senate, manchin and sinema, did not allow us to do that. this is why elections matter so much. we have to elect the right people into office because, if we do not, we're going to have a leadership, like the republican party, pushing forward austerity budgets that keeps food out of the mouths of babies while allowing corporations and the wealthy elite to thrive. elections matter. let's have the full conversation and let's be honest. we have to talk about debt, but we have to talk about gdp, and we have to push a conversation around the true wealth and health of our economy which begins with how we take care of the most vulnerable people. and we have not negotiated that
better than what's happening in the past. not only is this place open again if you can read the bill itself is much better. there is not runaway spending. this actually doing things, repealing amended it's already been spent could be the largest decision history of america. have really talk about common sense from the kitchen table. but they might actually see happening. >> a senator sinema been involved in the talks at all? >> as we walk through this we talked to the white house often. from joe manchin, sinema, others, we gather ideas from them too and were trying to solve a problem. the democrats will say enter democrat to the democrats are policy experts in certain areas we are dealing with. we want take the respect you and talk to them.
