With nearly 70 percent of the eligible population at least partially vaccinated, Sitka is starting to come out of its long COVID hibernation. Summer is just around the corner, and plans are now forming for summer activities, like outdoor concerts and 4th of July events.
When the Sitka Unified Command met last week (4-28-21), the group discussed recent and upcoming gatherings, from graduations to lawn concerts.
Fire Chief Craig Warren congratulated the staff at local high schools for holding carefully regulated proms last month without spurring any COVID outbreaks. ....

When the Sitka Unified Command met on Wednesday (2-19-21), there was still uncertainty around the recent expiration of the state’s COVID-19 disaster declaration.
City Administrator John Leach was concerned about how the change could affect vaccine allocations and FEMA reimbursements to the city.
“From what I’m seeing, the vaccine is still being distributed, it’s still showing up here,” he said. “But I don’t know what that means on a broader scale. Is the federal government distributing to the state of Alaska at the same rate if we’re not under and emergency declaration? But, for the time being, vaccines are still coming and and we’re still putting them in arms.” ....

The mood was lighter than usual when public officials gathered for the Sitka Unified Command meeting on Wednesday. (1-27-21).
That’s because Sitka’s COVID numbers were trending down. At the same time, the number of Sitkans receiving a first dose of the vaccine spiked, as SEARHC and White’s Pharmacy administered clinics throughout the week.
SEARHC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Elliot Bruhl said they would likely vaccinate another 800 people between Wednesday and Friday. Add that to over 500 shots administered by White’s Pharmacy, and the numbers are strong with over 2500 Sitkans receiving a first vaccine dose since mid-December. Many of those patients have already received their second shot. ....
