Queensland's world championship surfing tournament has been cancelled after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk refused to budge on the state's Covid-19 protocol. The World Surfing League's Corona Open - traditionally held at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast - will be replaced by the Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic on Sydney's northern beaches.  Queensland will no longer host a single event on the 2021 WSL calendar while New South Wales and Western Australia will both host two each. The World Surf League has certainly felt the full brunt of the pandemic. When Erik Logan took over a year ago, the WSL was on a high – Italo Ferreira had just won a world title at Pipe on the last heat of the year. Carissa Moore had won her fourth crown. Things were definitely looking up. Then 2020 happened. A pandemic never before seen gripped the Earth. The World Surf League cancelled the entirety of its season.

The iconic Snapper Rocks event is now set to take place on Sydney’s northern beaches. It is the second World Surf League event NSW has secured from interstate.
