Marianna, FL – The preliminary employment numbers released by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) show an unemployment rate of 5.0% in April 2021 for the 5-county region served by CareerSource Chipola (CSC). While this reflects a slight increase of 0.1% since March, it is also indicative of a significant increase in the area’s labor force over the last year as COVID-19 pandemic recovery continues. “This most recent labor force report continues to prove we are moving forward from the impacts of the pandemic,” says CSC Executive Director Richard Williams. “Over the last year, we’ve had significant gains in both our labor force and the number of people actually employed.” The local unemployment rate for the area as a whole is down 3.0% from April 2020, as both the labor pool and number of individuals returning to work continue to rebound. ....
CareerSource Chipola seeks veteran nominations Posted on Marianna, FL – CareerSource Chipola is seeking nominations for a member of the Board of Directors representing veterans of our armed services. The names and information for all qualified individuals nominated will be forwarded to the five-county workforce consortium so that they may select the individual to fill the position. This position is not mandated by federal or state requirements; however, the Board of Directors felt it was important to have a member of the board dedicated to representing the needs of veterans in the labor force. All CareerSource Chipola board members are volunteers that do not receive compensation for their service, but board members are reimbursed for travel to board meetings or other board events. ....
Chipola awarded $1.7 million for welding and construction Posted on Chipola College held a press conference April 28 to announce the award of a $1.7 million grant to support the college’s welding and building construction programs. The grant funds will be used to expand the programs to support Hurricane Michael recovery efforts pertaining to residential and commercial construction. Funds for the grant are part of the Rebuild Florida Workforce Recovery Training Program: Hurricane Michael project, administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. Chipola President Dr. Sarah Clemmons, says, “We are proud to be a part of Rebuild Florida’s Workforce Recovery Training efforts. Our new Building Construction program is helping to train workers to rebuild homes and businesses devastated by the hurricane. This decrease of 0.1% since February is indicative of the area’s ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The local unemployment rate for the area as a whole is down 0.7% from March 2020, as both the labor force and number of employed individuals continue to rebound. When compared to this time last year, the CSC region shows an increase of 422 individuals that have entered employment, and 295 fewer unemployed. “I’m really happy to see our five counties seeing an overall increase in the labor force and a decrease in our unemployment rate compared to both last month and last year,” says CSC Executive Director Richard Williams. “I’m hopeful this trend will continue, and we will see even more people employed in our region.” ....
