Gender Incongruence & HB 1217, And A Race Relations Lecture At DWU | In The Moment, Ep. 1009

March 16, 2021 Show 1009.
Sex and gender may seem to be simple; we are told there are men and there are women. However, according to scientists, medical and mental health professionals, and others who specialize in human development, the reality is much more complicated. Anne Dilenschneider, PhD, LPC-MH, WPATH Certified Gender Specialist, joins us to explain.
In Their Own Words then brings us a bill (HB 1217) promoting fairness in women's sports. Critics say the bill targets transgender South Dakotans.
Shawn Moore was a police officer in the Twin Cities for 10 years. As senior pastor of Living Spirit United Methodist Church in Minneapolis and an instructor of reconciliation studies at Bethel University and criminal justice and diversity at Metropolitan State University, he continues to work with law enforcement officials in the area of implicit bias training. Moore gives the Dakota Wesleyan University Stark Lecture via livestream at www.DWU.edu/live this Thursday night at 7:00.

Black Settlers of the Great Plains | Images of the Past

February 22, 2021 Show 993 Hour 2.
In a few moments we spend time artist Oliver Jeffers. He's not from South Dakota. But his books help us see ourselves from far away, maybe even from space.  But first ... a little South Dakota history.  The rush of European-American settlers entering Dakota Territory after the Civil War included all kinds of people hoping for a fresh start. And not all of those people had roots in Europe. A small but significant number of Black Americans were among those drawn to the region by various government-backed homestead programs. The lives and times of some of those Black settlers, including those who established a colony of sorts in Sully county, are the subject of today's Images of the Past.  Richard Edwards is the Director Emeritus of the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska. He's joining us by phone this morning from Denver.
