City agencies celebrate million dollar grant for new home construction

City agencies celebrate million dollar grant for new home construction
Jackson Mayor Scott Conger made a simple but meaningful statement during a press conference this past week.
“It’s always a good day when Jackson, Tennessee is awarded a million dollars,” the mayor said at the announcement of a coalition of agencies working together to receive a $1 million grant to build six houses in the city.
The Southwest Tennessee Community Development Corporation, Jackson Energy Authority, Healthy Communities LLC and the Community Redevelopment Agency all worked together to receive the grant from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency.
Brian James of HCB Development was the one credited with coordinating the effort with the agencies. It started with he and Chris Alexander discussing a partnership with the Southwest Community Development Corporation and director Patti Pickler.

JACKSON, Tenn.–Developers are working to get affordable housing built around two new area high schools.
A multi-agency partnership between Community Redevelopment Agency, Healthy Community , and the City of Jackson is helping to bring communities in the Hub City together by building affordable housing for residents.
Four of them are being built in East Jackson on Dupree Street and other homes next to JCM and Madison Academic, with more to come.
“It’s been a long time since new construction houses have been built in east Jackson. I think that this particular street has seen the positive benefits considering Southwest has already built four houses on this street,” said Brain James, Director of Community Development for Health Community, LLC.

Partnership, grant to build affordable housing around new schools

The development company responsible for two school projects currently underway will be a partner in the affordable housing construction and neighborhood revitalization in the areas around those schools, thanks to a grant and multi-agency collaboration.
In early 2021, Healthy Community, LLC submitted a $1 million grant proposal to build affordable homes around the renovated 6-12 Jackson Central-Merry High and the new Madison Academic High, both of which Healthy Community is overseeing as construction crews work overtime to finish for their August openings.
The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) has approved the grant through the Southwest Community Development Corporation even though THDA is still in the final stages of the grant process.
