Four months in to the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, a lack of supply is still Manitoba s main concern, but the province has yet to announce a plan to prevent unnecessary waste.
Mass-immunization clinics don t use standby lists, which have been adopted in some other provinces to administer leftover vaccines at the last minute, and doctors offices and pharmacies developed their own protocols to dole out all of their vaccines before they expired. Wastage wasn t a concern, representatives for physicians and pharmacists said, because of the limited number of doses clinics and pharmacies initially received last month. ....

As public school enrolment dropped during an atypical back-to-school season, homeschooling figures surged in the fall, especially in early grades: the number of kindergarten students registered rose by more than 200 per cent.
The province has published its 2020-21 enrolment report, which compiles headcounts taken in the public, independent and homeschool education systems, as of Sept. 30.
The latest annual report indicates 205,662 students are enrolled in K-12 classrooms, 88 per cent of which are in public schools, across Manitoba.
Total school division registrations typically fluctuate within one per cent of an increase every year, but approximately five per cent fewer students are attending public school this year in comparison to 2019. ....

Manitoba not doing adequate COVID testing, infectious-disease expert says
By: Dylan Robertson
Winnipeg Free Press
As COVID-19 variants start to take hold in Manitoba, the province is still only testing slightly more than half the capacity it insists is in place, despite metrics suggesting many cases aren’t being detected.
Manitoba’s test-positivity rate is 5.1 per cent as of Monday, and the percentage of COVID-19 tests coming back as positive within Winnipeg is 4.3 per cent.
Officials generally suggest keeping that rate below 2.5 per cent and have used three per cent as being the threshold for losing control of COVID-19 spread by knowing where cases are occurring and who needs to be isolated. ....
