Following a number of horse deaths at Churchill Downs in May, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission announced it is adding a safety steward to oversee safety procedures.
A new mortality report shows that a 13th horse died after racing at Churchill Downs during the Spring Meet.
Churchill Downs suspended racing at its track and moved the remainder of its Spring Meet to Ellis Park after the death of a dozen horses.
That is contributing to the equine deaths, but in belmont, over 670 horses from run in the spring meet, but these latest two deaths is the fourth at the track, the third and fourth. so according to the racing association, that is equating to 0.2% which is a lower figure, but the sport has long needed and is working towards centralized regulation when it is coming to the therapeutic treatments and drugs administered to the horses and mismanaged or contributing to the deaths of the horses, and it is casting a dark shadow over the sport this year in particular. >> thank you, carolyn manno, for th...
