Library funding is essential for communities

Here’s one for you. Missouri has made national news – PBS, NPR, and even Katie Couric’s daily newsletter, “Wake Up Call,” among others – and not in a good way. The Missouri House of Representatives has voted to remove public library funding from Missouri’s budget. The budget still must go to the Senate, and Springfield’s Sen. Hough says he intends to restore the funding of $4.5 million. After all, the Missouri Constitution says that Missouri supports “the establishment and development of free public libraries and . . . accepts the obligation of their support by the state and its subdivisions and municipalities in such manner may be provided by law.”

Inadequate Interpretation Services At Mass. DCF Lead To Risk Of Wrongful Family Separation, Complaint Alleges
Department of Children and Families
A group of non-profit and legal advocacy organizations have filed a federal complaint against the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, claiming that agency's failure to provide adequate interpretation services for non-English speakers leads to risk of wrongful family separation and violates civil rights law.
The case was brought by Lawyers for Civil Rights and the Massachusetts Appleseed Center for Law and Justice on behalf of the non-profit Haitian-Americans United, the Greater Boston Latino Network and an unnamed Latinx mother from Methuen who claims her limited English proficiency led to the agency substantiating a child neglect claim against her.

It is the room people remember for decades after their elementary school visit to the Missouri state Capitol. Most won't remember the name of the artist or anything the tour guide tells them about the painting that fills the big room.
But they'll remember the room — the House Lounge, home of Thomas Hart Benton's mural "The Social History of Missouri." Not political history or military history, but "social history," which allowed Benton to explore the breadth and depth of Missouri life, culture and politics from the early 1700s - 1936, the year he transferred his pencil sketches laying on tables that are still in the room to the great walls.
