Password hygiene might be going downhill for people with .gov email addresses, according to a new identity exposure report released by cyber crime analytics company SpyCloud.
SpyCloud analyzed 3,478 breaches and found that infostealer malware was associated with 61 percent of data breaches in 2023, which included 343 million stolen credentials, according to an annual report released Tuesday. The 2024 SpyCloud Identity Exposure Report showed that one in four compromised identity records contained information on a user’s physical location or network and that the average digital identity appears in nine breaches and is linked to 15 breach records.
The average identity has a 1 in 5 chance of already being a victim of infostealer malware infection.
A rise in identity-based attacks can be laid at the door of a rapid increase in malware, according to a new report. Analysis by SpyCloud finds that 61 percent of data breaches in 2023, involving over 343 million stolen credentials, were infostealer malware-related.
