Among the many events missing from this winter’s calendar was the annual concert by the Deerbolt Singers, a group which can trace its roots back almost 50 years. Despite having fallen quiet during the Covid pandemic, choir stalwart Gill Gibson says the singers can’t wait to bounce back with renewed vigour.
THE Deerbolt Singers began life as an all-male choir formed by conductor Ron Ward for prison officers in 1972. ....

Milkman Neil Rabbitts reported a 30 per cent increase in demand as more and more people embraced home deliveries – with Connelly’s Toyshop inundated with orders for games, activities and jigsaws to help keep spirits up.
Teesdale Conservation Volunteers – known to all as Rotters – closed its Startforth site but offered to deliver compost to the homes of those with gardens.
“We think Rotters will be particularly useful this year because most of us will be confined to their homes with many keen to grow their own food,” said Martin Bacon. ....

A COUPLE and their young son are celebrating after winning a competition to add some festive sparkle to their village.
Andrew and Debbie Robson, along with three-year-old Joey, are enjoying their first Christmas on the new Castle Croft estate, in Startforth, after moving across the Tees from Barnard Castle earlier this year.
They added a few extra decorations and illuminations to their new home and entered the Startforth Sparkles competition, run by the village’s parish council.
Mrs Robson said they heard about the contest via the Castle Croft residents’ social media channels and decided to enter. ....

Forest school puts smiles on the faces of adventurous pupils

PUPILS at a dale primary are taking to the great outdoors after teaming up with a forest school in Startforth.
Staff from Bright Woods, which is based at the Deepdale Nature Reserve, visit Ingleton Primary School each week for classes in the school grounds. Topics include everything from den building to campfire cooking.
Teacher Lauren Dominick said the classes had proved popular with children, who were coming to terms with missing long periods at school due to the Covid-19 alert.
“Because of that six months off, their wellbeing is a priority,” she said. Ms Dominick added that the classes were also helping children rebuild friendships and putting a smile back on their faces after spending so much time isolated from one another. Bright Woods is a community interest company which encourages children to be independent and adventurous. The company works with a range of organisations such as toddler and home education gr ....

A FAMILY have overcome the Covid lockdown blues by putting up one of Barnard Castle’s most impressive Christmas displays.
The Meighan family have turned to traditional colours and themes to decorate their Galgate home this year. The property is now locally known as the “Christmas house”.
Mum Zoe said the family had expanded on the decorations and lights they have put up each Christmas since moving into the house two-and-a-half years ago. ....
