Creating a vision for mobile service delivery

Introduction
The pervasiveness of sophisticated mobile devices by our users has given rise to a movement towards mobile delivery of library services. Each week Australian libraries are enabling mobile modules in Library Management Systems. Some are adopting more advanced native apps that offer users browsability, web 2.0 features, digital library cards and other utility functions.
In 2011 the National Library of Australia released a mobile catalogue app and a mobile audio tour for the Treasures Gallery, hinting at our intention to engage in this area. These were stand-alone initiatives that gave rise to a planning project aimed at scoping the Library‟s strategic directions in relation to mobile service delivery.

Easy as ABC - A triumph of re-usable metadata

These pieces of information are useful for finding a known item, where the user is searching for a specific broadcast that they already know exists. For the user searching more broadly by subjects or keywords, like “Indigenous” or “World War One”, they’re not going to find this record. We need to capture more information, so that broader searches will find this record in Trove. Luckily the ABC has included a large number of tags for each segment. These tags aren’t viewable to an ordinary user with their web browser but include additional helpful information – subjects, a brief description of the segment and more – that facilitate better discovery. To create a record for Trove, we capture data from both the elements displayed to users and this hidden data from tags.

If you phone us we are generally able to spend up to 10 minutes advising on the most appropriate information resources to guide you in your search.
If your enquiry cannot be answered in a short time frame, you may be referred to our research enquiry service. You may also be referred to another information provider if that is appropriate.

How We Collect

The Library develops its collections by building strong community connections, engaging with issues of contemporary significance and undertaking leadership activities, including innovating to address the impact of changing technologies on collecting and acquisition processes.
This section of the policy addresses the strategies, methodologies and range of approaches that the Library uses to acquire material, but does not include procedures, systems and workflows that the Library uses internally to acquire materials. Current information on these processes for publishers, creators and donors is available through the Library’s website, as well as related policy documents, including information about legal deposit and donating to the collection.

Libraries Australia Document Delivery: A System for a Variety of Users

Libraries Australia Document Delivery (LADD) is a web-based system for interlibrary lending and document delivery between Australian libraries, managed by the National Library of Australia. The LADD system has a broad user base with library members representing government departments, academic libraries, private companies and public libraries.
Interlibrary loan (ILL) staff at these member libraries range from volunteers and part-time workers to full-time professional staff working in a dedicated document supply section. Membership drawn from such diverse library sectors and working with such a range of staff resources shows that the LADD system has developed into a service that is used with success by a variety of members.
