The former presidential candidate met with local Democrats, transit workers, and a West Brighton business owner as he shared what Staten Island’s future would look like in a Yang mayoral administration.
A central part of that future and a focus of Yang’s tour was the borough’s transit system, and an eight-point plan he would suggest to improve it.
“I want to see if we can improve mass transit for the folks on Staten Island,” Yang said Friday. “I talked to a group of Staten Islanders just the other day and they had issues with the city’s what they consider relative neglect of the mass transit system on Staten Island, so I wanted to see it for myself.” ....

Cesar Vargas remembers praying at a cathedral in Puebla, Mexico when he was five years old before embarking on a 1800-mile journey to the border town of Tijuana with his siblings and mother. He crossed with his family into the U.S. without legal papers, traveling to Brighton Beach in Brooklyn to live with Vargas’ older brothers who were teenagers at the time.
“Brighton Beach was a hub for new immigrants from Mexico, Latin America, Russia, South Asian communities where immigrants like me would feel welcomed. And I did,” Vargas recalled. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Cesar Vargas came to this country with his family as a child, an undocumented immigrant. He just earned his citizenship earlier this month, and now he’s running to be Staten Island’s next borough president.
In a Wednesday interview with the Advance/SILive.com, Vargas, who arrived in the U.S. from Mexico when he was “five or six,” said that if elected he hopes to use his life experiences to better serve the people of Staten Island. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A Staten Island Democratic activist and small business owner has entered the race for borough president.
Lorie Honor, co-founder of Staten Island Women Who March and owner of Honor Wines in Stapleton, said she considers the position a “dream job” that she’s been considering for over a decade.
“I just felt like that this was the job that would always be a great fit for someone who really wants to do good things for the people of Staten Island,” she said. ....
