Health care systems in the United States have gradually embraced the concept that mental health should be treated on par with physical health, especially in light of increased rates of anxiety and depression during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
<p>A new study led by Oregon Health & Science University examined health outcomes from a county-by-county rollout of a plan to integrate physical and mental health care through managed care organizations in the state of Washington. The study found that the administrative change did not directly improve access or quality of health services, concluding that the administrative change may be necessary but insufficient on its own to improve access, quality and overall health outcomes for patients.</p>

Medicaid patients are already at disproportionate risk of opioid overdoses, almost four times higher than patients on commercial insurance.
