Doña Ana County settles lawsuit over detention center mistreatment

View Comments LAS CRUCES – Doña Ana County settled a 2019 lawsuit this month over the treatment of an inmate at the county detention center. In a federal complaint, Susan Hylton alleged she was placed in solitary confinement for 85 days in retaliation for requesting to report sexual and physical abuse following a strip search for drugs in October 2018, conducted as part of a "shakedown" of the female pod.  In the course of the search, she stated in the complaint that she was ordered to remove a feminine hygiene product while she was naked, in view of male guards and a fellow inmate.
