Des Moines County files lawsuit vs. contractors over snow-melt system

Woodward and Ruther laid out five similar defenses to the claim.
"Should this defendant be at fault ... said fault should be compared with that of the plaintiff and/or other parties," both defense attorneys said in their respective motions.
The attorneys were referencing Iowa Code 688, which requires judges to consider how at fault parties in the case are in comparison to each other.
In a case where the plaintiff does bear some fault, the amount of damages incurred by the plaintiff are to be reduced in accordance with the amount of fault the plaintiff bears.
In criminal cases, the jury is not allowed to know the penalties a defendant would face if convicted. However, in a civil case, it is the jury that decides what a defendant would have to pay.

Starting this summer, Burlington High School students no longer will have to leave the building for most health appointments.
Henderson County, Illinois-based Eagle View Community Health System is partnering with the Burlington School District to operate a school-based clinic at the high school that could open as early as next month.
"It's important to consider we start this summer," Superintendent Pat Coen said. "When you look at BHS, there are more people under that roof every day than 77.5% of the towns in Iowa, so there's going to be plenty of action, so we start now, work the bugs out, it's smaller, and then we're ready to hit the ground with everybody."

Des Moines County supervisors ended their Tuesday meeting with department heads by discussing the feasibility of removing the basement-entry restriction that has been in place at the courthouse since last year.
The courthouse front doors were closed last March to entry from Main Street.
Supervisor Jim Cary led off the discussion by saying the county should follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in re-opening the lobby.
Courthouse maintenance supervisor Rodney Bliesener said people have been inquiring about re-opening the lobby and asked those attending the meeting what they thought about opening the front doors to entry again.

Steven Leasure's family still looking 6 years after his disappearance

“It’s an ongoing and active investigation and we continue to work on it very diligently,” said Des Moines County Sheriff Kevin Glendening, explaining the sheriff’s office has followed up on numerous tips and the case continues to develop.
Vierra and Bowman, meanwhile, have never stopped looking for his body.
'We're on this. We're not going to go away'
They didn't stop looking after his bicycle was found June 9, 2015, at Lake West, and they didn't stop looking after his foot was found in the same lake one day short of a year after his bike had been discovered.
"We're on this. We're not going to go away," Vierra said. "I'm sure it's going to surface someday. As far as we know, Steven has been buried all over Burlington. We just don't know where."
