The 34-acre Stewley Orchard, at Ashill, is once again in the stewardship of The Taunton Cider Company. The original Taunton Cider firm, based in Norton Fitzwarren before it was taken over, planted the trees after buying the site back in the mid 1970s. The new company, set up with the same name in 2016, is now taking care of the 20 varieties of heritage apples grown at the site that will be returning to the press in the county town. Orchard manager Martin Ridler and master cider maker Bob Chaplin are part of the team bringing Stewley Orchard back to life. An annual yield of 300 tonnes of apples will be picked there to produce local cider at Cutliffe Farm, in Sherford. ....
