Trains have been halted in the northern Netherlands while Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, one of Europe’s busiest airports, has cancelled or delayed hundreds of flights

Storm Poly, which raged across our country on Wednesday morning, is the first very severe summer storm ever to hit the Netherlands. It thus set a record as the heaviest summer storm ever measured, according to Weeronline. A wind gust of 146 kilometers per hour was measured in IJmuiden on Wednesday morning. So far, this is also the strongest wind gust ever recorded in the summer in the Netherlands.

A woman in Haarlem was badly injured after a tree fell on her car during Storm Poly on Wednesday morning. She later died from her injuries. Her death is the first known fatality linked to the storm, which brought wind gusts of up to 146 kilometers per hour to the Netherlands, and sustained winds that were record-breaking for a summer storm.

Amsterdam's international airport cancelled and delayed numerous flights and Dutch railways ceased all trains due to the severe storm. The national meteorological institute declared a code red alert in three provinces because of the strong winds and heavy rain accompanying the storm. The summer storm named Storm Poly produced winds at a speed of 145 kilometers per hour (90 miles per hour) on the coast west of Amsterdam.
