good morning to viewers here in the united states and all around the world, i m john berman with brianna keilar. a deadly weekend in the united states with ten mass shootings since friday. ten. that is according to the gun violence archive. in philadelphia one of the busiest nightlife spots in the city that s where it took place there. in chattanooga at a nightclub. in arizona at a bar. in south carolina, virginia, and texas it was graduation parties. in phoenix a strip mall. omaha near an apartment complex. in macon georgia at an abandoned house. all told 12 people were killed, more than 60 hurt, the victims all ages including teenagers and senior citizens. so far in 2022 the u.s. has seen 246 mass shootings, 33 of those since the elementary school attack in uvalde, texas, just about two weeks ago. now, this morning there is cautious optimism on both sides as key senators say that a bipartisan deal on gun reform is within reach. negotiators will continue to talk this week
the local district attorney hung up the phone on me, telling me she wouldn t be commenting on the case. last week when dps stopped answering media questions, they referred all inquiries to busby but she s not answering either. i m nadia romero in new lisbon, wisconsin. 56-year-old douglas uda, the suspect in this case has a criminal history dating back to at least 2002 in the state of wisconsin for convictions of armed burglary and firearm charges. we know he would have crossed paths in the courtroom with judge john romer in 2005. the community is rattled because nothing like this ever happens in this small town. there is no threat to the public but that doesn t mean people are not impacted we his death. the city of chattanooga has experienced two mass shootings in the last week. this is what the mayor had to say. i m tired of standing in front of you talking about guns and bodies. chattanooga will put a stop to this. with us now, the mayor of chattanooga, tim kelly.
congress is expected to take up gun safety this week. cnn covering the crisis from all angles. reporter: in philadelphia at the site of one of ten shootings we saw throughout the country. this one, according to investigators, started as a street brawl saturday night in philly s south street neighborhood. at one point shots were fired sending hundreds of people the street running for cover. investigators say over a dozen injured, three fatally. police were on scene, managed to shoot and wound who they believe to have been one of the suspects, who got away. now the search is on for them. we heard from police commissioner over the weekend, who has concerns that the rate of shootings in her city is on pace to match or even exceed the record number of shootings they saw last year. reporter: in uvalde, texas, where state authorities have not just stopped answering the media s questions, they are avoiding them all together.
