Authorities have found a critical structural failure in one of the busiest bridges in Rhode Island and have closed its westbound side to begin a repair job expected to take months. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Monday evening that a “critical failure of some original 1960s bridge components” was located in the bridge. All westbound lanes will be closed and traffic diverted at first, the agency said.

The fire eventually spread to the cornfields below. That created a giant plume of smoke that spread north toward Interstate 80. Energie Kontor repaired and recommissioned the broken turbine on that occassion but the cause has yet to be determined, the company said. A spokesperson added: "At the moment, it cannot yet be determined that the two damages were generated by the same cause."
