University considers new colleges on the grounds of Hild Bede and other sites

The University told
Palatinate that “It hasn’t yet been determined” exactly what will go where.
Estimates for the size of the University’s new student accommodation developments have been published on the City of Durham Parish Council’s website. The figures were provided to the planning inspectorate by Durham University following the publication of its Estate Masterplan which includes the development of new colleges by 2027.
The plans include up to 1,000 new beds on the Hild Bede College site at Leazes Road, 400-500 new beds on the Elvet Hill car park site adjacent to Trevelyan College and up to 500 new beds behind Josephine Butler College. The latter could potentially mean the loss of the college’s orchard and allotment.

Inclusion has "fundamentally improved" during my tenure – Corbridge – Palatinate

By Tim Sigsworth and Toby Donegan-Cross
Durham University’s outgoing Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Stuart Corbridge, has claimed that inclusion and accessibility has “fundamentally improved” at the University during his six-year tenure.
In an exclusive interview with
Palatinate ahead of his retirement this summer, Professor Corbridge reflected on his time as Vice-Chancellor, a position he took up in September 2015.
Professor Corbridge discussed a variety of topics, from the Covid-19 pandemic and strike action, to inclusion and accessibility and the future of the University.

North-East universities at heart of nation's Covid-19 recovery

UNIVERSITIES, employers, and local leaders will work together to create thousands of local jobs as the recovery from the pandemic gathers pace.
New research by Universities UK (UUK), Universities and the UK’s economic recovery: an analysis of future impact, which was compiled by the National Centre for Entrepreneurship in Education (NCEE), is published today.
It predicts that over the next five years universities in the North-East will be involved in research projects with partners worth almost £1 billion; help 725 new businesses and charities to be formed and train more than 10,000 nurses, almost 4,000 medics and 8,000 teachers.
The research is published as UUK launches #GettingResults – a campaign to put universities at the heart of the economic and social recovery – with a renewed commitment from universities to do even more to reach out to new partners locally and nationally and deliver even greater impact than currently estimated.
