Durham University holds graduation ceremony online for second year in a row


Durham University Graduates formally received their degrees in absentia this week, after formal ceremonies were postponed until the summer of 2022. The university recorded a video to mark the occasion which can be found here.
In an email, Vice-Chancellor and Warden Stuart Corbridge told graduating students: “During a year as unprecedented as this one, your achievements are a testament to your hard work and dedication”.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that the online ceremony “is not replacing the summer ceremonies. All graduates who indicated a wish to be invited to a rescheduled ceremony during the Congregation & Parchment registration process will receive further information via email in due course.” ....

Exam results and resits rescheduled


In an email to all students, Durham University today announced it has rescheduled the publication of exam results and the August Resit period as a result of the introduction of the Academic Safety Net policy.
All final year results will be published by Wednesday 30th June 2021 and results for all other students will be published by Friday 2nd July 2021.
Additionally, the resit exam period will now take place from Monday 16th August to Wednesday 1st September 2021 and results from this will be published by 17th September 2021. The reason for this is to allow an extra half week for additional sittings due to deferrals. ....

7.8% of Durham graduates are from the North East


This percentage is significantly less than other universities located within the North East of England.
23% of Newcastle University’s admissions in the 2017/18 academic year were from the North East and a Centre For Cities study reported that half of the students at Northumbria originated from the region.
The North East of England has been identified by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) as the region where young people are least likely to access Higher Education.
The latest Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) data, published in February 2017, confirms that the region also has the highest proportion of entrants from low participation neighbourhoods (LPNs), at 23.2% compared to a national average of 11.3%. ....

Proportion of Durham first class graduates more than doubled in last decade


New analysis by
Palatinate has revealed the proportion of Durham graduates receiving first class honours rose from 18% in 2009/10 to a record 43% last year. Last year, 95% of Durham graduates secured a 2:1 or above. 
In the past decade, there has been a consistent upwards trend in the proportion of Durham first class honours graduates equivalent to a year-on-year increase of 10%.
Rates have increased in every department, with Computer Science experiencing the highest increases, where 71% of graduates received a first last year. The Office for Students calculated a UK average of firsts in 2018/19 at just 30% of graduates.
In early March,
Palatinate revealed that first class honours degrees had drastically increased in light of measures to mitigate the impact of the covid-19 pandemic such as online examinations. However, this new analysis indicates that this increase is part of a well-established long-term trend. ....
