COVID-19: Nine new cases involving six local transmissions – Health DG

Nine new COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country today, six of which were local transmissions, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said. This brings the cumulative figure of cases to 8,840, including 143 active cases, he said. “Of the six local transmissions, four are Malaysians while the other two are foreigners,” he said at the COVID-19 media briefing here today.  ....

The Klang Valley made up more than half of the new cases today. 
Other states with more than 100 new cases include Sarawak, Johor, Perak, Penang and Sabah.
On the flip side, the number of active cases continued to decline as recoveries outpaced new cases.
Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah reported a total of 3,414 new recoveries today.
The number of patients in the intensive care unit is also at the lowest level since Jan 14.
Active cases: 32,076
Another six people died from Covid-19, bringing the death toll to 1,062. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 The Health Ministry reported 2,192 new Covid-19 cases in the country over the past day, along with another six deaths.
Today’s new cases were markedly lower than the 3,297 registered yesterday.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor’s 910 made it the state with most new cases, ahead of Kuala Lumpur (303) and Sarawak (221). ....

Takes a year for nation to achieve herd immunity


KUALA LUMPUR – The country is expected to need a year to achieve herd immunity for the coronavirus through the National COVID-19 Immunisation Plan, one of the largest vaccination programmes in Malaysia.
Scientist Ts. Dr Ummirul Mukmimin Kahar from the Malaysian Genome Institute, National Institutes of Biotechnology Malaysia (NIBM) said that to achieve herd immunity, 80 per cent of the population needs to be vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine.

Malaysia is expected to receive the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech by the end of February with frontline staff being among early recipients of the vaccine.
“After February, the COVID-19 National Immunisation programme will become one of the largest vaccination exercise in Malaysia. The administration of the vaccine will be implemented in three phases and will run until February 2022,” he told Bernama in a special interview via Zoom here, today. ....
