MTN Lost 1,7 Million Subscribers Hit By Nigerian SIM Registration


While active MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) customers rose by 200 000 to 46.6 million.
The MoMo value of transactions was up 86.6% year-on-year (YOY) to $53.2 billion (R764 billion).
The company said the number of active merchants accepting MoMo payments doubled YoY to 521 000 while the total value of MoMo merchant payment (gross merchandise value –
GMV) rose by 299.2% to $4.8 billion (R57 billion). In Nigeria, MTN said it added
54 000 agents to end the quarter with 449 146 registered MoMo agents.
“The MTN Group has delivered a solid Q1 2021 trading performance, with service revenue and EBITDA margins expanding on the back of continued commercial momentum and resilient networks,” said MTN CEO Ralph Mupita, adding that the Group’s Ambition 2025 strategy had gained execution traction during challenging COVID-19 macroeconomic conditions in the quarter. ....

The recent lifting of the ban on new SIM card by the federal government will ease communication, writes Emma Okonji
Nigeria has a large population of telecoms subscribers, which reached over 200 million as at January 2021, with a teledensity of 104.89 per cent.
The figure, which keeps rising on a weekly basis, has placed Nigeria as the country with the fastest growing telecoms market in Africa and the entire world.
However, one unique feature about Nigerian subscribers is that each adult Nigerian has a minimum of two mobile phones with four SIM cards, because each mobile phone built for the African market, comes with two SIM slots. So on the average, an adult Nigerian has four lines (SIM Cards) from different telecoms service providers. ....

Insecurity: Canada warns its citizens in Nigeria - Daily Post Nigeria

Canada has issued a holiday security alert to its citizens planning to travel to Nigeria.
The north-American country in the new security alert posted on its website warned its citizens that security is unpredictable in the country.
It urged them to exercise a ‘high degree of caution” in Abuja, Calabar and Lagos State.
The alert stated that, ”Avoid non-essential travel to Nigeria due to the unpredictable security situation throughout the country and the significant risk of terrorism, crime, inter-communal clashes, armed attacks and kidnappings.

Suspension of SIM cards sales creating unemployment, ending car tracking business, others - Experts


“In line with the Federal Government desire to consolidate the achievement of the SIM Card registration exercise of September 2019, the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim (Pantami), has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to embark on another audit of the Subscriber Registration Database again.
“The objective of the audit exercise is to verify and ensure compliance by Mobile Network Operators with the set quality standards and requirements of SIM Card Registration as issued by the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Commission.
“Accordingly, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are hereby directed to immediately suspend the sale, registration and activation of new SIM Cards until the audit exercise is concluded, and Government has conveyed the new direction. ....
