welcome to this special 8:00 hour of the cnn newsroom. i m jim acosta in washington and we begin this hour with an emotional anniversary of a pivotal moment in american history. on a busy weekend when the race for the white house was taking shape. president joe biden was in selma, alabama, today for the anniversary of bloody sunday, and a speech before some of the country s most prominent civil rights leaders. while outside washington, a very different scene in a very different speech, as former president donald trump spoke to the conservative political action conference, vowing retribution in his words. and earlier today in california, the politician who could be trump s biggest rival for the gop nomination in 2024, florida governor ron desantis, speaking at the ronald reagan library. but we begin in selma, alabama, with arlette saenz. arlette, what can you tell us? jim, president biden used the anniversary of bloody sunday as an historic moment in civil rights his ....

facility could increase the militarization of police. we get now to atlanta. nick valencia with more this morning. good morning. police say they detained 35 people. what else do you no he this morning? that s right. police are calling this a coordinated attack and occurred during what protesters were promoting. a week of protests and festivities with the goal of stopping this facility. police and fire training facility. it would be the biggest of its kind if it s completed. and on sunday, police say 35 people were taken into custody after throwing fireworks, lornlg racks and bricks and molotov cocktails at police. no officers were injured. they did say some protesters suffered sminor injuries. listen to the police chief at a press conference late last night characterize it saying this wasn t about the protests of a propose wi proposed police and fire training facility. this is about anarchy. actions such as this will not be tolerated. when you attack law enforcement ....
this weekend as the start of a week of protests and festivities, with the goal of being to stop the construction of this proposed $90 million, 85-acre police and fire training facility. it would be the largest of its kind in the country, if it ends up being built. and what according to police, they say happened, at least 35 people were taken into custody. they say several of those that were detained were from outside of the atlanta area. and this really has become a staging area for activists across the country to protest police and we have seen several acts of violence in recent months. listen to what police had to say at a press conference late last night. this is not appropriate. this is criminal activity. and the charges that will be brought forth will show that. when you throw commercial-grade fireworks, when you throw molotov cocktails, large rocks, a number of items at officers, your only intent is to harm. reporter: opponents of this fire and police training ....
