need for someone from outside washington, someone to run as an outsider. that is how he is presenting himself. make no mistake. this is a very uphill battle for him. the race is vcrowded. he is not well known. the biggest challenge trying to get on that first debate stage august 23rd. the candidates must have 40,000 donors from 20 different states to make that debate stage. certainly he is in the race today. a growing field, which likely benefits the frontrunner, donald trump. >> we will be watching all of it. thank you. and a really important programming note. tomorrow right here on "cnn this morning" mayor francis suarez will join us live. as we look at where things stand now, elie, john, back with us, the fact that we have mayor suarez now in the race, we have a rather crowded field which we have been saying some time now, but it keeps getting a little bit more crowded, can he change the conversation?

welcome to this special 8:00 hour of the "cnn newsroom." i'm jim acosta in washington and we begin this hour with an emotional anniversary of a pivotal moment in american history. on a busy weekend when the race for the white house was taking shape. president joe biden was in selma, alabama, today for the anniversary of bloody sunday, and a speech before some of the country's most prominent civil rights leaders. while outside washington, a very different scene in a very different speech, as former president donald trump spoke to the conservative political action conference, vowing retribution in his words. and earlier today in california, the politician who could be trump's biggest rival for the gop nomination in 2024, florida governor ron desantis, speaking at the ronald reagan library. but we begin in selma, alabama, with arlette saenz. arlette, what can you tell us? >> jim, president biden used the anniversary of bloody sunday as

conservative ideas, much less talk about conservative policy also, the debt and other things, that a cult of personal around the president. certainly it's not the harbinger of what's to come in the broader sense of the republican primary. this is just one stop along the way. the actual, you know, real republican voters and others out there will certainly make this decision, but this is essentially a trump rally over three days in a hotel here just outside washington. not necessarily a broader sample of what some republicans are looking for. >> audi, you make such a good.when you say nikki haley is saying, hey if you're tired of losing, they adopt think he necessarily lost, but she still has to convince them she can win. i wonder if she has a winning lane here, considering this divide. >> another question is, how many other people will be in that
