India deals with fears about a third Covid-19 wave affecting kids

BANGALORE - As India's second wave of Covid-19 continues its devastation, the country is relying on scientific clarifications and public health preparedness in an attempt to allay growing fears about a potential third wave affecting children.
Doctors and health experts have noted a rise in infections among children since April, fuelling anxiety that children - also the only segment of the population ineligible for vaccines in India - may fare worse in a possible third wave.
"There is no scientific evidence and epidemiological data to say that a third wave of Covid-19 in India will affect mainly the children. All susceptible age groups are likely to be equally affected," said Dr Chandrakant Lahariya, an epidemiologist formerly with the World Health Organisation.

Immunity boosters for children against COVID-19 not advisable, say doctors

Express News Service
BENGALURU: With parents scouting for immunity boosters for their children in the hope of keeping Covid-19 at bay, pharmacies have seen a spike in demand. But experts warn that it could do more harm than good to those aged below five — including inducing conditions like arthritis and rheumatism at an earlier stage in life.
With the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, many worried parents have been asking health professionals for immunity-boosting supplements, like vitamin C, D and zinc supplements for children. But experts say a well-balanced meal for children between 0-5 years of age is more than enough to give them adequate immunity.
