The plea says that the forward caste population is only 6% of the country's population, yet 10% of seats in government educational institutions and jobs will be provided to the 'poor of the forward caste' due to the EWS quota.
A 10 per cent reservation in all colleges and government jobs for the poorer sections of India's so-called "upper castes", introduced just before the 2019 general elections, will be at stake as the Supreme Court rules on its validity today.
In a big win for the government, the Supreme Court today backed a 10 per cent quota in jobs and education for the poor or EWS (Economically Weaker Sections), introduced just before the 2019 general elections.
Notably, the Chhattisgarh High Court in September this year had set aside the state government's 2012 order (when BJP was in power) to raise the quota to 58 per cent in government jobs and admissions in educational institutions and held that overall reservation exceeding the apex court-mandated 50 per cent ceiling was unconstitutional.
The court asked the government if it would like to revisit the limit, clarifying that it is not embarking into the policy domain but is only trying to ascertain whether constitutional principles have been adhered to or not.
