Split Review: SeeYouSpaceCowboy / If I Die First

A Sure Disaster
Summary
Rating
SeeYouSpaceCowboy were releasing a split EP with
If I Die First, my heart sank. Because while I love the former to death, finding them to be one of the new metalcore greats, I simply cannot stand the latter.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy represents the stronger side of the 2000’s metalcore revival wave crashing over lately with their solid label debut and fantastic debut full-length in 2019. Whereas to me,
If I Die First represented the weakest kind of nasally, whiny emo-post-hardcore resurgence also taking root nowadays with their woeful 2020 EP, ‘
My Poison Arms.’ Outside of really appreciating hearing more of guitarist and screamer

SeeYouSpaceCowboy and If I Die First Talk "Sick" Collab, Fake Blood, White Belts

Its title bears the phrase
A Sure Disaster, but the upcoming split between SeeYouSpaceCowboy and If I Die First finds perfect harmony in the key of 'core. The former's righteous "sasscore"— at once grindy, chuggy and flamboyantly weird — and the latter's piercing yet melodic post-hardcore are two different sides of the white belt coin, but when they literally collide on the project's collaborative title track, "bloodstainedeyes," it fucking works. Between its masterful centerpiece and the two songs from each band that bookend it, the split that's due out May 14th via Pure Noise Records is one of the most exciting heavy pairings in recent memory (you can pre-order it now).

Hear SeeYouSpaceCowboy's New "Sasscore" Rager

Last month, SeeYouSpaceCowboy and If I Die First announced their upcoming split,
A Sure Disaster, by releasing the project's collaborative centerpiece, the wonderfully chaotic "bloodstainedeyes" and its splat-tastic music video. Now, SYSC are giving us a taste of one of their solo songs from the five-track project, and it's a writhing, shape-shifting stomper called "Painting a Clear Picture From a Unreliable Narrator."
After kicking off with some delightful hand claps, the San Diego metalcore juggernauts blend their signature sasscore with a soaring clean chorus, grindy blast beats and a couple chuggy breakdowns. The band have made enormous sonic leaps since their early days as a mathy screamo group, and after dipping their toes in early 2000s metalcore (think Poison the Well, From Autumn to Ashes) on their 2019 debut

It’s been around two years since Josh Rosenblum released his album
Move Yourself. “The album is labeled as pop rock, but our jazz, funk, and blues roots always find a way into our music in one way or another,” he says of the entirely self-produced and independently released LP. Backup players included Cedric Jones (drums, cajon) and Andrew Melendez (bass). “It’s designed to get you up and moving. I wrote the album as motivational encouragement to ‘move on’ from negativity, while still maintaining the realist perspective that everything in life takes work to accomplish. It’s also an homage to my relocation to Southern California [in summer 2018]…I spent my entire life living in my hometown of Modesto performing music full time with the weddings, bars, private events, never truly knowing what other opportunities could be out there waiting. So my wife and I decided to take our little dog and cat and just take the chance and move.” The Josh Rosenblum Band will debut their new album
