Miti appeals to manufacturing sector to help curb Covid-19 to keep economy open, Eurocham tells members

PETALING JAYA: The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has appealed to all foreign and local companies to help reduce Covid-19 infections and break the chain of infections in order to continue keeping the economy open for business, says the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Eurocham).
Eurocham, in a letter to its members on Sunday (Jan 24), said that its CEO Sven Schneider attended a meeting with Miti, represented by its secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, on the evening of Jan 22 to discuss Covid-19 infections involving workers in the manufacturing sector.
The statement noted that the preliminary outcome of the meeting involved the sector needing to take action to minimise community movement and social activities, such as companies being required to assign at least one human resources personnel to manage and coordinate foreign workers staying in dormitories.

Government to launch full-scale lockdown after Feb 4 if infection rates do not decline — Eurocham

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 24): The government will launch a full-scale lockdown after Feb 4 if the number of Covid-19 cases is not brought under control, according to the European Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Eurocham).
In a circular to its members sighted by theedgemarkets.com, the chamber of commerce said that in a meeting with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) yesterday, its chief executive officer (CEO) Sven Schneider was informed that if infection rates did not decrease, the government will launch a strict lockdown after Feb 4, when the current movement control order (MCO) is set to expire.
“This is the current situation we are facing and MITI is appealing to all companies, foreign and local, to join the effort of reducing infections, breaking the chain, to keep the economy open for business,” it said.

Eurocham denies govt warned of possible lockdown

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 24): The European Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Eurocham) Malaysia has denied that the government had warned that it would impose a lockdown immediately after Feb 4. In a statement tonight, the chamber said it had an informal meeting with the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI) — which was summarised in an internal circular to its members dated Jan 22 that was sighted by theedgemarkets.com — where the "demanding situation" of worker accomodations was brought up numerous times as a key condition to breaking the chain of infections.
