Ireland to replace last coal plant with huge green hub and floating wind farm

The Republic of Ireland is set to say goodbye to coal, after the state-owned Electricity Supply Board announced it would transform its last remaining coal generation, the 915MW Moneypoint facility, into a green energy hub, including a 1.4GW floating offshore wind farm.
The closure of the Moneypoint coal-fired power station is in line with the Ireland Government’s ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. It was already scheduled “no later than 2025”.
The Moneypoint site in County Clare will now be transformed into a green energy hub, and work has already begun on a new €50m Sustainable System Support facility which will include the largest Synchronous Compensator in the world, which will provide a range of electrical services to the country’s electricity grid which would previously have been supplied by thermal fired power stations. ....

Ireland to Get 1.4 GW Floating Wind Farm, Green Hub

Irish energy company ESB and Equinor will jointly develop a 1.4 GW Moneypoint floating offshore wind farm off the West Coast of Ireland.

The Moneypoint wind farm will be developed off the coast of Counties Clare and Kerry in two phases. Once complete, the wind farm will be capable of powering more than 1.6 million homes in Ireland, ESB said.
Subject to the appropriate consents being granted, the wind farm is expected to be in production within the next decade.

The wind farm is part of ESB’s plan to transform the Moneypoint power station in County Clare into a green energy hub. At its peak, Moneypoint produced 25 per cent of Ireland’s electricity requirements, burning primarily coal. ....

A new floating offshore wind farm of 1,400MW will be developed off the coast of Clare as part of a multi-billion Euro transformation of Moneypoint Power Station into a green energy renewables hub, the ESB has announced.
The ESB has already commenced work on transforming Moneypoint into a green energy hub, breaking ground on a new €50 million Sustainable System Support facility in the coming weeks. This Synchronous Compensator will be the largest of its kind in the world. ....
