Their teachers union rights. there will be a teach-in for those students on madison s library mall. the teach-in will focus on the elimination of collective bargaining and elimination and the proposed cuts in the education budget. joining me now is nathan o shaugnessy, a science teacher at madison memorial high school in madison, wisconsin. thank you for joining us tonight, mr. o shaugnessy. hey, thanks, lawrence. thanks for having me. could you tell me, how has this situation disrupted, if it has, any of your classroom activity so far? really not much. i mean, we had a few days off for political action. the kids on their day off came down and supported us, which was an amazing event to see hundreds of kids on their day off coming down state street, meeting the memorial teachers, and walking with us around the capitol. it was just awesome. since then it s business as ....
Tension built up, the chancellor came forward and said we re all going to come together, talk about this and have a teach-in. there were people that showed up from all over the place, all over the state in addition to you and other students. but when you got there, you decided not to participate in that teach-in. you walked out. tell me why you did that. why didn t you stay and engage in a fruitful discussion while there were so many people there with open ears? okay. well, before teach-in, the university sponsored teach-in, there was actually a press conference held by the students, so that s why there were so many students out there for the teach-in. initially when we found out about the teach-in, we were a little upset. we were a little dissatisfied because we felt like a teach-in is not something a chancellor of a university should hold. a teach-in is for student organizations. a teach-in is for grassroots organizing. a teach-in is for people who don t have resources to put a few ....
Lecture hall. we felt like a two-hour teach-in is not going to do it jifts or fully educate the community or the campus on why these issues affect our communities and why they have a detrimental effect on our education and our well-being on the campus. so we felt like chancellor fox should have definitely taken more active measures in trying to alleviate some of the tensions and some of the pressure on the students and also the campus climate. so, yeah, the teach-in we felt like we could do our own justice and walk out, have our own teach-in and educate our own students about how we feel as students as opposed to some university structured, university put-together teach-in. well, let s push forward here and talk about solutions. chancellor mary ann fox, we did try we did reach out to her and she declined an on-camera interview for this segment but there was a website that was put together called battle hate and she made a statement on that ....
A noose was found in the library. a noose is a special symbol of horror for african-americans. it is not a joke. nothing about a prank about it. it strikes at the heart of african-american community and dignity. reporter: soon after word spread, captain tom morris says a female student came forward. apparently some of the students told her about the incident. she said that was me. that s not what i meant. she called our dispatch said i m the one that did it. here s why. it had nothing to do with the activities of the past week. reporter: authorities say the student didn t connect the news to recent events on campus. hard to believe since the cries for change by the black student union and its supporters have been deafening. the students are afraid. they need to know what the chancellor is going to do to keep them safe on campus. reporter: university administrators say they re taking steps to calm the racial turmoil. even organizing a teach-in on wednesday to help improve th ....
All right. nothing wrong with a barbecue. how about a compton cookout? sounds like a family get-together until you realize what some desensitized kids were up to. get, this students at the university of california san diego celebrated, and i use that word very loosely, black history month with a party off campus. that party titled a compton cookout. a facebook invite promised a taste of life in the ghetto and had chicken and watermelon on the menu. could you be any more stupid? campus administrators now looking into this. meanwhile another invite on another facebook page. this one asking for your participation in getting these students reprimanded. teachable moment? well, the chancellor is planning a teach-in next week to discuss respect and civility. a popular italian cooking show host is stewing in his own hot water right now. ....
