Tour de France: Mark Cavendish looking beyond '35' and toward 2022 season


Yet when pressed about 35, a victory that would put Cavendish in a class of his own, he demurred much like he has been since the Tour started and the chatter of the all-time record heated up with each victory.
“It’s the same ambition to win one more as it was to win one 13 years ago,” he said during a Zoom call. “Every opportunity there is for a sprint I’d like to win. Cavendish equals Merckx stage win tally

Mark Cavendish equalled the all-time tally of Tour de France stage wins when he sped over the finish line at Carcassonne on Friday for a landmark 34th victory in the race.
It was Cavendish’s fourth win on the 2021 edition and sees the British sprinter equal Eddy Merckx’s 46-year-old record.  ....

Mark Cavendish won his third stage on the 2021 Tour de France on Tuesday to move within one of Eddy Merckx’s all-time record of 34 victories but said he is motivated more by inspiring people to overcome difficulties.
At the end of a flat run from Albertville to Valence, the 36-year-old Briton edged Belgians Wout van Aert and Jasper Philipsen over the line to also keep a firm grip on the sprint points green jersey with hs 33rd win on the world’s greatest bike race. ....

'Old-school' Cavendish closes on Merckx record after new Tour de France win

The Mark Cavendish comeback gathered pace Thursday as he won his second stage in three days with a triumph on a day for pure sprinters along a 1.7km home straight at Chateauroux.
After a barren five-year spell on the Tour, the win on stage six took Cavendish’s tally on the world’s greatest bike race to 32, just two short of Belgian great Eddy Merckx’s all-time record of 34. ....
