What impact will robots and autonomous systems have on urban ecosystems?

 E-Mail
The University of Leeds has coordinated a study with 170 experts from 35 countries, including E.T.S. Agronomic Engineering lecturer Luis Perez Urrestarazu. The study conclusions have just been published in the journal
Nature Ecology & Evolution.
The researchers highlighted opportunities to improve the way green spaces are monitored and maintained and helping people to interact with and appreciate the natural world around them. Similarly, as autonomous vehicles become more widely used in cities, pollution and traffic congestion are set to fall.
But they also warn that advances in robotics and automation could be harmful to the environment. They may, for example generate new sources of waste and pollution, with potentially substantial negative implications for urban nature. Cities may have to be re-planned to provide enough space for robots and drones to operate, possibly leading to a loss of planted areas. They could also increase existing social inequali ....

Spin hall effect of light with near 100% efficiency

 E-Mail
A POSTECH-KAIST joint research team has successfully developed a technique to reach near-unity efficiency of SHEL by using an artificially-designed metasurface.
Professor Junsuk Rho of POSTECH s departments of mechanical engineering and chemical engineering, and Ph.D. candidate Minkyung Kim and Dr. Dasol Lee of Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with Professor Bumki Min and Hyukjoon Cho of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at KAIST have together proposed a technique to enhance the SHEL with near 100% efficiency using an anisotropic metasurface. For this, the joint research team designed a metasurface that transmits most light of one polarization and reflects the light from the other, verifying that the SHEL occurs in high-frequency region. These research findings were recently published in the February issue of Laser and Photonics Reviews, an authoritative journal in optics. ....

Sun and Tong to develop geoweaver platform

 E-Mail
Ziheng Sun, Research Assistant Professor, Center for Spatial Information Science and Systems (CSISS), and Daniel Tong, Associate Professor, Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences, are set to begin a project to make artificial intelligence (AI)-based Earth scientific workflows more shareable, replicable, reusable, and scalable. They will do this by further developing the existing open-source workflow management system (WfMS), GeoWeaver, into a stable operational platform for NASA s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS).
Upon the success of the project, machine learning practitioners in NASA Earth data sciences will save numerous hours and efforts on preparing training datasets from [the] NASA EOSDIS archive, tuning their machine learning models, and accelerate the generation of in-time actionable information for stakeholders to take actions, Sun said. ....

Direct cloning method CAPTUREs novel microbial natural products

 E-Mail
Microorganisms possess natural product biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that may harbor unique bioactivities for use in drug development and agricultural applications. However, many uncharacterized microbial BGCs remain inaccessible. Researchers at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign previously demonstrated a technique using transcription factor decoys to activate large, silent BGCs in bacteria to aid in natural product discovery.
Now, they have developed a direct cloning method that aims to accelerate large-scale discovery of novel natural products. Their findings are reported in the journal
Nature Communications.
Named Cas12a assisted precise targeted cloning using in vivo Cre-lox recombination (CAPTURE), the method allows for direct cloning of large genomic fragments, including those with high-GC content or sequence repeats. Where existing direct cloning methods fail to effectively clone natural product BGCs of this nature, CAPTURE excels. ....
