New research will unveil the future for natural preservation of food products

Associate Professor Clarissa Schwab from the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University has just received an Ascending Investigator grant of DKK 10 million from the Novo Nordisk Foundation for her research project, BioFunc, which aims to improve sustainability in the preservation of food products.
The project focuses on using natural biological preservation methods rather than chemical preservatives in order to eliminate the food waste problem.
Worldwide, approximately 30 per cent of the food produced is lost, and the biggest cause is spoilage by bacteria and fungi. Microbial food spoilage and poisoning can occur along the entire value chain, despite modern preservation methods, and bacteria and fungi are therefore a problem for the consumer, and for the entire food industry, which guarantees food safety and quality, and which also wants to reduce waste, says Clarissa Schwab. ....

Researchers at Tohoku University and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) have discovered a new spintronic phenomenon - a persistent rotation of chiral-spin structure.
Their discovery was published in the journal
Nature Materials on May 13, 2021.
Tohoku University and JAEA researchers studied the response of chiral-spin structure of a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn3Sn thin film to electron spin injection and found that the chiral-spin structure shows persistent rotation at zero magnetic field. Moreover, their frequency can be tuned by the applied current. ....

New method of seeing graphene growing using a standard electron microscope

Researchers from the University of Surrey have revealed a new method that enables common laboratory scanning electron microscopes to see graphene growing over a microchip surface in real time.
This discovery, published in
ACS Applied Nano Materials, could create a path to control the growth of graphene in production factories and lead to the reliable production of graphene layers.
Dispensing with the use of expensive bespoke systems, the new technique not only produces graphene sheets reliably but also allows to use fast-acting catalysts that reduce growth times from several hours to only a few minutes.
With the use of video imagining, the team from Surrey s Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) have shown graphene growing over an iron catalyst, using a silicon nitride membrane produced within a silicon chip. Robot enables communication between people isolated due to COVID-19 and their relatives

Researchers of the Integrated Systems Engineering Group of the University of Malaga (UMA) have designed a telepresence robot that enables people suffering from COVID-19 to talk to their loved ones.
Although this scientific team has been working in social robotics for more than a decade within the ROSI project, they have provided this new design with additional functions in order to adapt it to the pandemic needs, with the aim of facilitating the work of professionals in nursing homes and hospitals.
