Vodafone to open O-RAN test and integration lab
Vodafone is to open an O-RAN test and integration lab at its Newbury HQ. Initially it will employ 30 engineers.
Vodafone has taken a lead in O-RAN with trials in several European countries and establishing the UK’s first O-RAN site in Wales.
The Test and Integration Lab will work with vendors to ensure their products comply with Vodafone and the industry’s O-RAN specs. Work will begin at the innovation and development stages, through to commercial deployments and ongoing lifecycle management.
The report of the Telecom Diversification Taskforce’s states: “The Government should set out a clear ambition for the deployment of equipment from alternative suppliers, or from Open RAN solutions, to a meaningful proportion of the network – and clarify its intent to ensure these alternative suppliers should form an integral part of the UK’s urban networks in the longer term. ....

Britain faces call for telecoms kit target to boost suppliers

A British taskforce has called for targets for the amount of telecoms kit to be sourced from new vendors or through open architecture to boost the range of 5G suppliers after Britain s ban on Huawei.
The Telecom Diversification Taskforce also said that a timetable to wind down 2G and 3G networks needed to be drawn up and the development of Open RAN architecture supported.
These measures are designed to support Britain s 250 million pound (A$451 million) diversification strategy that aims to reduce dependence on Ericsson and Nokia.
It said Britain should set a challenging ambition for the portion of kit supplied by alternative vendors or using Open RAN, adding that 25 percent by the mid-2020s should be the initial aspiration for network operators. ....
