Digital affairs ministry to be launched on Aug. 27

The Ministry of Digital Affairs is to be launched on Aug. 27, with Minister Without Portfolio Audrey Tang (唐鳳) serving as its first minister, Executive Yuan spokesman Lo Ping-cheng (羅秉成) said yesterday.
The new ministry is to promote interdisciplinary cooperation in digital services, complete and apply the “Data for Social Good” system and facilitate technology and data democratization.
National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University associate engineering professor Chiueh Her-ming (闕河鳴) and iPass Corp chairman Lee Huai-jen (李懷仁) are to serve as political deputy ministers.

Download speeds for 4G on average improved in 2021

The average fixed-location download speed of Taiwan’s 4G systems last year was 122.53 megabits per second (Mbps), up 2.96 percent from 119Mbps in 2020, National Communications Commission (NCC) data showed.
However, the average upload speed was 24.92Mbps, down 4.59 percent from 26.12Mbps in 2020 due to surge in remote work and remote learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to self-publishing on social media, the NCC said, citing a survey it released on Wednesday last week.
Download speeds ranged from 106.38Mbps to 147.69Mpbs, while upload speeds ranged from 20.75Mbps to 29.54Mpbs across Taiwan, it said, adding that Kinmen, Miaoli and Penghu counties ....

Chinese Phones Sold in Taiwan Accused of Content Censorship, Users' Private Data May Be Tracked by Beijing

According to the NCC, investigations revealed that seven application software were installed within the Xiaomi phone. The censorship features are suspected of blocking Internet access or relating browsing data back to Mainland China. The average fixed-location download speed of Taiwan’s 4G systems last year was 119 megabits per second (Mbps), up from 108.33Mbps in 2019, a survey conducted by the National Communications Commission (NCC) showed yesterday.
However, the average upload speed was down from 27.18Mbps in 2019 to 26.12Mbps due to an increased demand to upload videos to social media, the commission said.
The commission tasked the Telecom Technology Center to measure 4G Internet speeds in fixed locations and on moving objects from June and October last year, NCC Deputy Chairman Wong Po-tsung (翁柏宗) said yesterday, adding that the center tested 4G services offered by Taiwan’s five main carriers. ....
