That s why intelligence doesn t have a great indication before they are launched. they can basically pop them up out of the ground and shoot them off. it was an intermediate ballistic missile. the intermediate range. irbm. when they teased this out it looked like it might have had a bigger payload on it than the one launched in may. this one probably didn t have the range to reach guam. i couch all that with probablies. they re still doing all the telemetry on it and trying to figure out just exactly where it landed. and they have said that there is not a threat to either the homeland or to guam. importantly, though, guys, they shot it to the northeast not the southeast. in your reporting and strolls through the e-ring in the pentagon, was this a huge surprise that the north koreans did this? or yes and no. they expected the north korean to do something in conjunction with the joint south korean/u.s. ....

Done the science and we have to rely on the capability. it s a provocative move for north korea to do that. kim would have to be suicidal at that point to launch a missile and telemetry says in the route of guam. we have to assume it s nuclear. why? we described to them the comp t capability. and one thing for them to ramp it up. and the u.s. military specific command is getting involved in the rhetoric as well. i was a bit surprised. speaking as a former pentagon correspondent, during the first gulf war, u.s. air force b-1, b lancer bombers on guam stand ready to fulfill #fighttonight mission if needed to do so. is that the way it goes? unusual. part of a pressure campaign dictated by the white house to ....

Launch of a ballistic missile out of north korea. i want to go right to our pentagon correspondent, hans nichols. what do we know about this launch? we know that it was an intercontinental ballistic missile. we knew how long it flew. it flew for about 45 minutes. and how far it traveled. about 1,000 kilometers. the scary part about all of this, when you tease that out, because basically they shot this missile straight up into the air, then it landed. when you tease it out and you give it a theoretical range, we ll see just how far and what it could potentially reach. potentially, the lower 48. now, i say that, because the last missile launch that we had from north korea, the july 4th one, flew for 37 minutes. it flew also a distance of about 930 kilometers. when you do all of the telemetry, you do all of the analysis, you get a much greater distance. the longer these missiles stay aloft, the more likely it is they can reach the continental united states. just a quick background on th ....

Time they conduct the test, they learn something even from the failure, and what is the most important thing from the military standpoint of using a ballistic missile for aggressive purposes is to hit a specific point in the target, and that is requiring a wide variety of thing, and not the least of which is the accomplishment of sufficient range to get to the target and telemetry, and the guidance of where to go. and it is this bit of it that north korea is attempting to get to as quickly as it possibly can. and then it has the additional problem of trying to miniaturize nuclear warhead so that it can be delivered by a ballistic missile. so what north korea s doing right now is following several ....

Term, the goal of north korea has remained unchanged. and that goal is to the destruction of the south korean state, because the north koreans believe they have the right to rule the entire peninsula, and so they have the short term and long term strategies, and they think that this is the way to accomplish them. what do we know about the nuclear capabilities? well, they have detonated, and they have had five tests. they now have buried a device at their test site in northeastern north korea and they have sealed the tunnel and completed all of the the initial preparation, and the only thing that they are waiting for is kim jong-un to make a political decision of when to actually set the thing off. so at this point and let me just get that sorry, to interrupt you sh, butt me get that straight. are you saying that they have a nuclear weapon that is ready and set to go? yes. specifically not and yes, with the telemetry. ....
