CNN The Lead With Jake Tapper March 31, 2014 20:08:00

My humble opinion, if they are asking for help, we should provide it in spades. michael, you know better than anyone, the f acaa and similar organizations look for lessons from situations like this. right. what lessons should we be learning right now? just to go back to what michael said, quite frankly we re putting the best resources in the world at a point in the investigation where we have very little hope of seeing any debris. let s go back to one lesson. remember when you talked about telemetry in the acars system. malaysia air decided not to buy the app. about $10 a flight? probably $100,000 per plane in the fleet, swift, it was called. regardless of the acars, it would have provided essential information, the same thing that air france used to find that search and at least understand where that was. so lessons learned? ....

I m sure that the technology exists, and the technology installs to make a disappearance like this impossible. well, i think that we can certainly, the tracking equipment is easy. i mean, a back paccer, and you can t put anything on the plane inexpensively because the approvals are so complex, but a backpacker can buy a device for $150 that can track him on the satellite, and the family can watch him on the internet. this technology is not complicated. ultimately, don, we would be looki looking for telemetry where the data from the airplane is sent down constantly to the earth as it has been since 1981 to 2010 on the space shuttle, and limited parameters. there are issues of bandwidth and how the data may be used, but i think that they are all challenges that can be surpassed. steve wallace, appreciate ....

Closure, but let s talk about that when we know how many are coming and when they re arriving. reporter: is it very clearly now a case of not looking for survivors but looking for debris and looking for the black boxes? to this point in time we have no successfully identified and recovered any debris from the aircraft in question. reporter: can you confirm this is the place that the plane crashed? reporter: in his view the plane was in the southern ocean. do you share that strength of view? i think if we re going to go on data and information giving us a hint as to what has actually happened, that s all we ve got to go on. the telemetry from the satellite, the inmarsat satellite and the performance of the aircraft is all we ve got to go on. i think we ve got to rely on that and that s what we ve been ....

Run around the antarctic and then it s right on the edge where you get the indian gyre. it could be affected by both. probably a much better telemetry on the site because they are dropping a buoy stick to pick that data up, but if the storms are running through like they are and wind is blowing in a different direction than the current, it will move it in a different direction, or at least they will work in tandem to move it not exactly the same way the current is flowing i heard somebody say it s like finding a needle in a haystack and it s like finding a needle in nebraska and that is moving. do we have any hope? is this giving us any hope? a project i m in the middle of working on is the discovery of a world war ii submarine i found 70 years after it sank. the families are just getting some kind of cathartic like the families in this catastrophe they didn t know for 70 years, ....

Airplane in flight, and telemetry. these aircraft, and there is less known about them than a tractor trailer that drives across this country, and so in this day and age when we are so wired an connected and in fact, as we sit in the back of the aircraft and surfing the web, the idea that this plane isn t tracked, you know, to a very precise level at every moment is actu actually astonishing to most people, and it is a reflection of how the aviation industry works. frankly, a lot of old technology that works, and the aviation industry is reluctant to embrac new technology because of the safety issues, understandable, but it needs to push into the 21st century, and this is a classic example. i think of the poor families wond wondering where their loved ones are, and this is completely avoidable. all right. i think that just holding my cell phone here, and i am more track and that plane. yes, yes. and we had laurie seigel on, ....
