Relying on government to limit its own power is a really bad strategy for liberty. Ultimately, it’s up to us to defend our constitution and our liberty whether the government people want us to or not.
1. Individual, natural right of self defense. 2. In defense of liberty, the union, and the states. 3. To prevent the "greatest threat to liberty" - large standing armies.
Thomas Jefferson called the 10th Amendment the "foundation of the Constitution," because it tells us how to read the entire document. But he was far from alone. Even before the 10th was ever drafted, leading federalists - like James Wilson - repeatedly told us the constitution was written under this same structure.
A lot of people like to call the 2nd Amendment their "gun permit." But not one single founder referred to things this way - and for good reason.
