Charles E. Rankin, retired editor of the University of Oklahoma Press and astute historian of key figures of the Old West, posed a question a while back when we were having lunch and discussing James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok.
“What the hell was Phil Coe thinking?”
We agreed on the answer.
“He wasn’t.”

Coe’s decision to try to gun down Hickok on October 5, 1871, in Abilene, Kansas, might not have been the wisest choice for a 32-year-old, but it turned out to be a pretty good career move.

Battle of Pleasant Hill Re-enactment and Festival is set for this weekend in Pelican, Louisiana which is about 3 miles north of Pleasant Hill.

Friday, April 9, 2021
This is a day for school children to attend and learn about the battle. Youngsters will be transported to the site from 9am-1pm on Friday.
Saturday, April 10, 2021
10 AM Battle of Pleasant Hill Parade – Downtown Pleasant Hill
11 AM Battle of Pleasant Hill program at Mansfield State Historic Site
12 PM – 1 PM Guest Speaker: Donne Kennedy, “They Fought for Us” – Battlefield Hall
