Book of the Month - 1494 2AY - Local / National News

Be Inspired By Green Cleaning
If you’re after some practical tips or ‘life hacks’ surrounding eco-friendly cleaning, cooking or gardening, then The Ace Book Club book of the month for April is a must read.
The book is the accumulation of knowledge and trial and error by mother and daughter team Alisa and Cynthia Mayne.
“Mum and I actually wrote this ten years ago, and I think this might be the fifth updated edition now,” Alisa explained.
“We grew up self-sufficiently with mum and dad until I was seven, and I’ve been in the food industry, running businesses for 25 years, so we’ve combined our knowledge with lots of simple life tips – some are tried and tested and been around for ages, others are just new techniques to put into your house.

Brigades Out in Force - 1494 2AY - Local / National News

Good Friday Tins at the Ready
Local volunteers and emergency services personnel are uniting in their fundraising efforts for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
After missing out on tin rattling last year, volunteers such as John Vandeven, Captain of Albury Civic Station for Fire and Rescue NSW are looking forward to hitting the streets with their fire trucks and connecting with their local communities.
“To see the people who have saved all year – numerous children that have got their piggy banks and loose change that they save all year, lots of people love to see us and it was so disheartening last year when we couldn’t do it due to COVID,” John said.

Dederang Picnic Races - 1494 2AY - Local / National News

Reconnecting at the Races
Horse racing has been held at Dederang since 1865, but Saturday’s picnic races is perhaps the most keenly anticipated yet.
With COVID impacting sport and community events, President of Dederang Race Club Marcus Goonan says the Kiewa River Valley community is particularly looking forward to reconnecting.
“It’s really highlighted this year by the fact that the football season didn’t get off the ground and the cricket season has certainly been affected,” Marcus told Kylie and Kev.
“Sport is a really big thing in some of these smaller country communities. The Recreation Reserve supports seven different sporting clubs, which is really significant for a small town like ourselves for the community and connection.”

"Some clubs are experiencing slow numbers in particular age groups," says League Operations Manager Matthew Elliott.
"Clubs are definitely on the lookout for new players, and also welcoming back returning players as well."
There will be eight teams in the league this year, after the Wodonga Bulldogs was added to the fixture. They will be competing for the premiership flag against the Yarrawonga Pigeons, Alpine Lions (based in Whorouly), Lavington Panthers, Murray Felines (based in Rutherglen), Thurgoona Bulldogs, Wangaratta Rovers and Wodonga Raiders.

Qantas launches new route

Qantas has confirmed they will be running regular services between the two cities in time for the ski season.
Albury City Mayor Kevin Mack has welcomed the announcement, particularly for tourist operators who missed out on the season last year.
“We’re very excited to be welcoming this new service from Qantas at a time when our tourism businesses are recovering from the effects of COVID-19," he says.
"Having this new direct link into the important Queensland market will put smiles on lots of faces."
He said it will not only be good for the Queensland snow bunnies, but will be great for north east and border residents who want to plan a warmer winter holiday.
