Do you find it easy or difficult to write Christmas songs? Why? Christmas songs are an area that both excite and frustrate me. It’s exciting to dive in and try to find new ways to sing about the wonderful story of the Incarnation when the Word became flesh, and as The Message puts it, God “moved into the neighborhood.” I made a Christmas record a few years ago ( These Christmas Lights) and loved the process especially having a specified theme to focus so intently on. The frustrating part for me, though, is that more than at any other time of the year, it seems people aren’t massively open to singing new songs we want to sing the old favorites. Many of these carols are wonderful and for that reason have made it down through the years and have become a special part of our sung heritage.
