Springfield may loan millions to help transform downtown parking lot

Springfield may loan up to $10 million to help transform a lot next to the former downtown Buick dealership into a development that officials say would be a first for the city and help address shortages in housing supply.
The Scherer family, which has owned the property for decades, has partnered with a Portland developer to build an eight-story building in what’s currently a parking lot between the former dealership building and the post office on A Street between Seventh and Eighth streets.
The project, which calls for commercial space on the ground floor topped by around 85 market-rate apartments, would be the first of its kind in Springfield, said Courtney Griesel, the city’s economic development director.
