Panic Drives Gas Shortages After Colonial Pipeline Ransomware Attack By Vanessa Romo  May 11, 2021 The Colonial Pipeline hack that shut down the major gasoline and jet fuel pipeline to large swaths of the south and the east coast, is leading to temporary shortages. The cyberattack disabled computer systems responsible for fuel production from Texas to the northeast and now gas stations in the southeast are seeing panicked motorists lining up in droves to fill their tanks and jerrycans. Jennifer Granholm, the US energy secretary, urged Americans to not hoard gasoline, adding that the pipeline should be fully operational by Wednesday evening. “Let me emphasize that much as there was no cause for say, hoarding toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic, there should be no cause for hoarding gasoline,” Granholm said. The surge in buying has pushed fuel prices to their highest levels in six years, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA). “People are taking their entire family fleet of vehicles to the gas station and filing up when they don’t need to,”...
