Washington farmers should remove volunteer wheat before planting their next crop. The volunteer wheat can act as a green bridge for insects and the diseases they carry, such as wheat curl mites with wheat streak mosaic virus. Destroying volunteer wheat after the new crop emerges is too late, Washington State University researchers warn.
