WASHINGTON – The State of Washington has adopted proposals by tribal nations to replace derogatory place names with those that are respectful of Native American women. The proposals from the
Nine place names that used a derogatory term for Native American women have now been officially replaced by names that were proposed by Washington tribes.
The word “sq---” was declared a derogatory term for Native American women in November 2021 by Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
