In light of these announcements, the following statements are attributable to World Vision Australia’s CEO Daniel Wordsworth:
On further support to India:
“India has shown great generosity as a global partner in the fight against COVID-19, so it’s welcome news that Australia will continue to support India in its own hour of need.

The Pacific Islands News Association has paid tribute to media workers covering the COVID-19 pandemic, recognising their commitment and the “great sacrifice” they have made.
In a statement made to mark 2021 World Press Freedom Day today, PINA notes that while “our health workers have been rightfully recognised as ‘frontliners’ in the fight against COVID19, the critical frontline efforts of our media workers in bringing much-needed information and news to our people has been largely forgotten.”
“Much like our health sector colleagues, our media workers go about their daily work, also at high personal risk and exposure to this virus, but with the unwavering desire to inform and educate our people,” PINA says.

Pudong's delicacies and fruits are on sale.
From huangjiu cake to xiasha shaomai, from Iranian pottery to Syrian soap, more than 400 local and exotic products are on offer in two pop-up fairs which opened on Saturday in bustling Lujiazui in the Pudong New Area.
Of the products, more than half are Shanghai, China and global debuts, and 36 have been displayed at the China International Import Expo, according to Wu Jun, deputy director of the Pudong Commerce Commission.
The five-day food fair was unveiled on Saturday morning at the foot of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It raised the curtain on Pudong’s shopping frenzy.

NIMH » Asia Pacific Research for Mental Health Services (ASPIRE-MHS)

Project Overview
Asia Pacific Research for Mental Health Services (ASPIRE-MHS) is a network of researchers, service providers, and policy makers in Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Australia, and the United States. Working together, their goals are 1) to expand regional research capacity in implementation science, and 2) to evaluate the strategies and costs associated with bringing to scale a transdiagnostic psychotherapy program for common mental disorders.  The scale-up implementation study is being conducted in Myanmar. Capacity-building activities are occurring in Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
Implementation Research Study
The implementation research study is designed to identify effective organizational strategies for integrating an evidence-based mental health intervention into care across different types of provider agencies in Myanmar. The intervention is the Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), which is a transdiagnostic intervention that can be used by non-mental health professionals to treat individuals with depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress or any combination of these disorders. Multiple trials, including among Myanmar adults, have established the effectiveness of CETA for use in low-resource settings that rely on non-mental health specialist providers working within a supervised system. CETA uses principles of cognitive-behavior therapy, including engagement, psychoeducation, anxiety management, behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring, imaginal/gradual exposure, in vivo exposure, suicide/homicide assessment and planning, and cognitive-behavioral therapy for substance abuse.

Returned Servicemen and Women stand at attention at the dawn service in Katikati.

Under an indigo dawn sky, Kelly Smith from the New Zealand Navy gave a chilling reminder of the human sacrifice of war at Katikati's Anzac Day Dawn Service in front of a 300-strong crowd at Memorial Square on Sunday.
The Lieutenant Commander said April 25 saw the first significant engagement of New Zealand troops in the First World War when they landed at Gallipoli.
By the end of that fateful day, more than 600 New Zealanders had been killed or wounded - more than in the three years of the South African Boer War.

History shows a resounding referendum – like recently in Bougainville – is not alone in deciding future independence.

At the school hall in Buka, in that heady hour after the declaration of Bougainville’s referendum result in December 2019 – a thumping 97.7% in favour of independence – journalists from around the world dialled me up looking for some local flavour. Each asked variants of two questions: Are we witnessing the beginning of the newest country in the world, and “Can you find us a Bougainvillean to speak with”?

On April 14, Ana Patricia Non set up a small bamboo cart on a pavement in a Quezon City village, stocking it with 800 pesos (S$22.00) worth of groceries, including vegetables, packs of rice and noodles, canned food, and bottles of water.
The 26-year-old resident attached a handwritten cardboard sign that read “Maginhawa Community Pantry”, after the name of the street, and came with a guideline written in Tagalog: “Give according to your means, take according to your need.”
On Facebook, she shared pictures of the cart and people helping themselves to the community pantry’s contents, and encouraged others to set up their own food banks. “You can do it, just don’t expect anything in return,” Non, a visual communications graduate from the University of the Philippines (UP), said in an interview with local media.

Inspired by the "bayanihan spirit" shown by their kabayayans at home, Filipinos in Timor-Leste helped locals set up their own community pantry.
In a Facebook post, Laser Sumagaysay, Vice Consul of the Philippine Embassy in Dili, Timor-Leste, shared photos of Bairro Farol's Community Pantry.
The project is organized by both the Filipino and Timorese communities with the help of Vice Consul Pedro Laranjeira of the Timorese Embassy in Manila.
"I shared the bayanihan and community pantry concepts to Timorese friends and colleagues as a way to possibly help the Timorese community," Sumagaysay told GMA News Online.

5 Questions for 5 Young Climate Leaders | Care International

CARE stands with women and girls on the frontlines of the climate emergency.
Climate change poses a threat to everyone on this planet, but the consequences for already marginalized communities are by far the most severe. The climate crisis acts as a threat multiplier, exacerbating existing inequalities like wealth and gender. It’s estimated that climate change could push an additional 132 million people into poverty by 2030. Women make up 80 percent of people displaced by climate change. If we’re going to tackle this potential catastrophe, we must prioritize women and girls.
Women are routinely on the frontlines of the climate emergency. Even so, women are still marginalized from making decisions on how to respond to the climate crisis. But despite these oppositional forces, we know that still #SheLeadsInCrisis. All over the world there are inspirational, powerful young women working on mitigation and adaptation measures, or towards solutions and societal change.

Delay is the new climate denial — what the Government needs to do to step up our ambition

OPINION: As the Government builds its response to the Climate Commission’s advice for New Zealand’s climate action over the next 15 years, the opportunities for it to unlock action and support communities across the country to reduce New Zealand’s pollution are huge.
Acceleration is essential as New Zealand’s pathway is way off track right now, threatening people’s well-being and livelihoods not only here at home, but across the world.

Going above 1.5 degrees of heating puts millions more at risk of life-threatening heatwaves and poverty.
As farmers from Northland to Banks Peninsula face another autumn with extremely dry conditions, communities in Timor Leste have been struck by the worst floods in 70 years, killing at least 42 people and rendering over 14,000 homeless in the midst of a Covid-19 community outbreak.

This,  Dr. Tony Leachon, former adviser to the National COVID-19 Task Force noted,   is the country’s most  pressing need.  And former Secretary of Health as well as Social Welfare and Development Dr. Esperanza Cabral, narrating the stories of her patients who were denied access to health care services in our hospitals agreed. Citing RA 8344, which stated that “you cannot turn away patients without first stabilizing him or her and that if the patient needs admission but cannot be accommodated, the hospital is obligated to arrange for transfer to another facility.” She apologized to everybody and sympathizes with our hospitals, but the care of patients takes precedence over all other difficulties, she noted.

Double trouble: floods and COVID-19 have merged to pose great danger for Timor-Leste

In flood-ravaged Dili, COVID-19 restrictions were abandoned as the disaster unfolded. But it means an already escalating pandemic situation may spiral out of control.
